

Jack Melvin DeKorne aged 87 of Grand Rapids peacefully went to be with his Lord on Sunday, January 9, 2011. Jack will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 64 years Betsy DeKorne, children; Jack (Wilma) DeKorne of Richmond, VA, Dale (Jane) DeKorne of Grand Rapids, MI, James (Greta) DeKorne of Grand Rapids, MI, Joan (Mike) Ranney of Alexandria, VA, David (Barb) DeKorne of Grand Rapids, MI, 12 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. In 1946 after serving in the US Navy aboard the USS Atlanta, Jack joined in the family furniture business, which was founded by his father Lewis DeKorne, in 1916. DeKorne Furniture Company would grow under his leadership to four Ethan Allen stores serving all of Western Michigan. For his efforts he received the Ethan Allen Lifetime Achievement Award. He was also active in many other business and civic endeavors. Jack was an active church member of Westview Christian Reformed church, was an elder, and also active in the Christian Reformed denomination. He served on the Calvin College Board of Trustees and various other programs of the college. Through all this he remained connected to his WWII shipmates and was active as the treasurer of the USS Atlanta Reunion group. A special place in Jack's heart was always reserved for his family and the wonderful times they shared at Glen Lake in Northern Michigan. Funeral Services will be held at noon on Thursday, January 13, 2011 at Westview Christian Reformed Church 2929 Leonard St NW with Pastors Sid Draayer and Ron Baker officiating. Interment at Fairplains Cemetery. Friends and relatives may greet the family on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the church.
