He was preceded in death by an infant baby brother, his parents, wife Phyllis and sister Patsy Weaver. Surviving are his sister Valerie "Peg" Olthoff, children; Donna (Jerry) Duron, Laura (Loran) Moyer, Sandra (Scott Lynch) Hoppa, Charles (Brenda) Wilkerson, many grandchildren as well as nieces and nephews.
John attended Comstock Park High School before proudly serving his country in the United States Marine Corp. At a young age he suffered a stroke that would impact his life, but it did not remove the smile he was known for from his face.
In Johns later years, he fell in love with Phyllis Meyers, whom he met at Leonard Terrace. They enjoyed an amazing final chapter together, cruising, camping, and spending time with extended family and friends. He adored his grandchildren, the lakeshore, fishing, blueberries and will always be remembered for his kind heart and generosity. He was known as the puzzle man and chocolate thief at Marsh Ridge where he lived for many years. John was most proud of his country and his time in the United States Marine Corp.
