Judge H. David Soet

Judge H. David Soet, age 88, passed away in his sleep Friday, October 27, 2023. He was born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan, attending Creston High School and Grand Rapids Junior College. David received his bachelor’s (1958) and law degrees (1961) from the University of Michigan. He served in the Army Reserves. He was founding member of Pinsky, Smith and Soet law firm in Grand Rapids before being appointed as a Third Circuit Court Judge in 1987. He served his community in this capacity for 16 years.

David was admired by many for his intellect, dry humor, and snappy attire. He was loved for his kindness and compassion for all; and his devotion to those he held dear. David liked to describe himself as a “yellow dog democrat” meaning that even if the democrats ran a yellow dog, he would vote for them. He might have even preferred it, as he was a dog lover, with his most beloved being Ellie, Gracie, and Abby. He was an avid Tigers fan, spending hours watching and analyzing the games with his life-long friend, Joe Zainea.

He is survived by: his wife, Ann Sullivan-Soet; daughter, Johanna (Vincent) Buzolits; step-son, Richard Paauwe; grandchildren, Hannah Buzolits, Henry Buzolits, Lucy Buzolits, Noah Resnicow, and Gabe Resnicow; sister-in-law, Patricia Yates; and brother-in-law, Bob (Margarita) Sullivan; as well as, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

He is preceded in death by: his son, Peter Soet; and his brother, John "Jay" Soet.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, November 5, 2023 at 2:00 pm at All Souls Community Church of West Michigan, 2727 Michigan Avenue NE. Childcare will be provided.
