Marie Louisa (Edgerle) Borek was born on December 30, 1926 and passed away on February 5 at the age of 97. She was preceded in death by her husband Gene, her son Jim, parents Ed and Anna Edgerle, her brother Tom and sister Ruth, in-laws Adam and Katherine Borek.
Marie grew up on the southeast side of Grand Rapids, attending St. Francis grade school and Catholic Central High School. After graduation, she worked at the Gas Company until she married her sweetheart Gene Borek when he returned from service in WWII. Together they raised six children.
Marie kept busy at home raising her children, keeping up with their activities as well as her own as a longtime member of the Blessed Sacrament Ladies Guild (serving as vice-president and then president). When her kids got older she went back to work in a medical office downtown and she also used to work on some of the stage shows as a dresser at DeVos Hall. She was an avid walker, enjoyed working in her garden, loved to read, and most especially loved keeping up and spending time with all her grandchildren. For a number of years Marie crocheted hats and mittens for the Santa Claus Girls. She and Gene were longtime active members of Blessed Sacrament Parish.
Marie is survived by her children Mary Anne (Joe) Lange, Barb (Larry) Smith, John (Brian Topolewski) Borek, Charles Borek, and Lori Borek; 12 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Blessed Sacrament Church, 2275 Diamond Ave NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49505 on Friday, February 9 at 11:00. The Family will receive guests for one hour prior to the service starting at 10:00 at the church. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Blessed Sacrament Church and to Care Team Hospice.
