It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Marilyn Jeanne Van Artsen, a beloved mother, wife, grandmother, and friend, who left us on October 12, 2026 at the age of 82. Born and raised in Middleville, MI, Marilyn lived a life filled with love, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to others.
Marilyn graduated from Middleville High School, where she was an accomplished clarinet player in the school band and participated in many school clubs and activities. She spent her summers working at her parents' ice cream shop alongside her three brothers, Ron, Chas, and Greg, creating lifelong memories of laughter and hard work. Her kind and caring spirit led her to pursue a degree in nursing at Western Michigan University, where she developed her passion for helping others.
In 1965, Marilyn married her soul mate, Jack Van Artsen, and together they shared 56 beautiful years of love and partnership until Jack’s passing in 2020. Their marriage was a testament to the strength of their bond, marked by mutual respect and shared adventures through thick and thin. Together, they raised two children, Jack Jr. and Colleen whom she adored and guided with wisdom and grace.
A dedicated public servant, Marilyn worked at the U.S. Post Office, where she was known for her kindness and bright smile. Her selflessness extended far beyond her professional life, as she spent countless hours volunteering at the local hospital and in her community. Whether helping at local charities or lending a hand to anyone who asked, Marilyn was always there to offer comfort and support.
She found joy in simple pleasures— knitting, crafting ceramics, reading, playing cards, and spending cherished time with her family. She especially loved camping trips with her grandchildren, where her warmth and playful spirit created lasting memories. For many years, she and Jack spent time escaping the cold winters of Michigan to enjoy the sunshine in Florida, where they made friends and continued to live life to the fullest.
Marilyn will be remembered for her tireless generosity, her boundless love for her family, and her willingness to do anything for anyone in need. She embodied kindness, humility, and grace, and her legacy of love will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
She is preceded in death by her parents Charles and Donna Cox, and is survived by her loving children Jack (Soroya) Van Artsen, Jr. and Colleen (Clare) Murphy; her cherished grandchildren Dylan and Logan (Grace) Cripe, and Elise Van Artsen; and many other family members and friends. Her presence will be deeply missed, but her spirit of love and generosity will forever remain a guiding light in the lives of those she touched.
A celebration of life visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 28, 6pm -8pm at Reyers North Valley Chapel, 2815 Fuller Ave NE Grand Rapids, MI 49505. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in her memory to Edison Christian Life Services, 1000 Edison Ave NW, Grand Rapids, MI 49504.
