Michael Jay Rooze

While attending East Grand Rapids High School Mike studied and memorized the Canterbury tales general prologue in Middle English. He would recite this often in his later years to prove his memory was still complete. After graduating he attended Grand Rapids Junior College where he met the love of his life, Barbara Bruinsma. The young couple were quickly smitten and were married on May 23, 1964.

A man of strong work ethic, Mike spent his career in construction specializing in plastering. He was a master of the art and was able to create intricate designs. Mike also believed in giving back to his community. He was a member of the Shriners serving as the chairman of Child Care and spent many hours on the road helping to shuttle patients to and from the hospital in Chicago. He also was a member of the masons.

When he wasn’t working, Mike was found with his family making memories while camping at Ludington State Park, fishing when the water was calm, and boating around the lake.

This was referred to as “back to back fun”.

Mike will be most remembered for his character, quiet faith, elaborate storytelling, his funny jokes and love of family especially his grandsons who adoringly called him “Grampy”.

Mike is survived by his wife of 62 years, Barbara, his daughters: Valerie (Jeff) Gootjes and Deborah (Kevin) Keefer; his grandsons: Ethan (Elizabeth Neiderheide) Gootjes and Jared Gootjes; his sister Rebecca (Duane) James; his brothers-in-law: Ben (Pat) and Bill (Rose) Bruinsma; and his sister-in-law Marcia Bruinsma and many other relatives. Mike was preceded in death by his grandson Aaron Gootjes; his brothers-in-law James and Thomas Bruinsma and his niece Wendi Bruinsma.

A memorial visitation will be held on Sunday August 9, 2026, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Reyers North Valley Chapel.
