Phyllis Joan “Joan” Chamberlain, 97, passed away peacefully on December 6, 2025, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. A lifelong Michigander, she was born on September 25, 1928, in Traverse City to Morgan and Gladys Sanborn.
Joan graduated from Traverse City High School and went on to attend beauty school, where she honed her skills and began a career that reflected her attention to detail and love of helping others feel their best. She also worked in administration at Care Corporation. Her life was marked by devotion—to her family, her faith, and the many people whose lives she touched with her kindness and generosity.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband John "Bob" Chamberlain, with whom she shared many cherished years; her daughter Cynthia "Cindy" Chamberlain; her brother Arland "Arlie" Sanborn; and her parents. Though they are no longer here, their memories lived on in Joan’s stories and the love she continued to share with those around her.
Joan is lovingly remembered by her grandson Kyle Berciunas and his wife Lauren Berciunas; as well as numerous nieces and nephews who were blessed by her warmth and wisdom. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt—and a gentle presence in the lives of all who knew her.
A devout Christian throughout her life, Joan was an active member of Second Congregational Church. Her faith guided her daily actions and brought comfort to those around her. She sang joyfully in the church choir for many years, sharing both music and fellowship with her congregation.
Joan found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She loved baking—especially during the holidays—and spent countless hours sewing, knitting and crocheting beautiful pieces for friends and family.
Those who knew Joan will remember not only how organized and particular she could be but also how funny, smart, loving, generous, and gentle she truly was. Whether offering a helping hand or sharing a warm smile at just the right moment, she made every space brighter simply by being there.
May Phyllis Joan Chamberlain’s memory bring comfort to all who knew and loved her. A Visitation will be held on January 9, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Second Congregational Church 525 Cheshire Dr. NE. A Memorial Service will be held on January 9, 2026, at 12:00 PM at the same location.
