After graduating from high school, Richard was promptly drafted into the US Army. He proudly served our country during the Vietnam War. Soon after his discharge, he met the former Theresa Harig, and the two were soon smitten. They were united in marriage on August 22, 1972.
Richard supported his family working for Knoll Furniture in their manufacturing plant. His career spanned 33 hard-working years doing a variety of jobs from working the line to running the Hi-Low.
Always up for some excitement, Richard enjoyed horse racing and was an avid fan of the tracks in the Michigan region. He had an eye for a good horse and knew the nuances of a carefully placed bet. He also spent time as a volunteer DJ in the 90’s. During the time slot from 3:00 to 4:00 a.m. Richard and buddy played tunes on WYCE 88.1 FM. For many years, he sold camping gear, sports cards and fireworks from his booth at the flea market in 6 Lakes, near the family’s summer getaway.
He was a regular at the public library, enjoyed Thursday’s weekly breakfast with his old coworkers and loved watching old Westerns.
Richard will be remembered for being a devoted family man with a strong work ethic and quiet faith.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Theresa; his children Denise (Matthew) Phillips-Meyer and Richard Carl Williams; his grandchildren: Carey Ann, Nathan Richard, Aaron Bradley and Taylor Zachary Phillips; his sister Pam (Greg) Wescot, and his brother-in-law Carl Harig as well as many other relatives. He was preceded in death by his son-in-law Harold Phillips, his brother Randy Williams and his parents.
A memorial visitation will be held on Friday September 18, 2026, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Reyers North Valley Chapel.
