Robert Michael Mullin, age 74 of Grand Rapids, passed away on August 13, 2021 at Newaygo Medical Care Facility in Fremont Michigan. Bob was born in Grand Rapids on February 14, 1947 to Harry & Dulcie (Smith) Mullin.
Growing up in the Standale area, Bob attended the Cooperville Schools. After graduating from high school, Bob attended Western Michigan University from 1965 to 1968 where he earned his BA. Always wanting to learn he continued his education at Wayne State in 1970 and attended courses at Michigan State in 1972. Ultimately, Bob ended up at the University of Detroit 1972 -1974 where he earned his Master’s degree.
Bob settled into his teaching career at Pierce Middle School teaching math for about 17 years. Then transferred to Mason Middle School as an assisted principal. Dedicated to both the students and faculty of the schools he taught for, Bob is remembered for his culinary skills, making breakfast for the teachers and his office being filled with M&M collectables. He made himself available for his students teaching each one so they learned in a fun and comfortable environment. Bob was also involved with the school PTA and Waterford Education Association for many years.
He loved tending to his gardens and planning his next adventure. The world traveler loved exploring destinations throughout Europe and the Caribbean. With his travel partner, Cindy, they cruised the seas and rivers documenting their excursions with pictures from their trips. Whether it was Costa Rica, Iceland, or cruising around Italy, Bob always took away the knowledge of the local cultures.
He was a collector. From the M&Ms in his school office to Christmas ornaments, Bob enjoyed the thrill of the find. While living in Waterford, he acquired a gorgeous collection of Waterford crystal, countless Hallmark Christmas ornaments, many he kept mint in their boxes. He loved shopping and adding to his extensive wardrobe. Working with middle schools, warranted one needing to keep up with the fashion trends.
Most importantly, Bob was devoted to his family. A confirmed bachelor, Bob shared his home with his faithful canine companions, Pebbles and Bam Bam. Always close to his mother, Bob is remembered for his care and compassion for her until her passing. He was a loving Uncle who spoiled the nieces and nephews with the latest and greatest toys and gadgets for birthdays and Christmas. Bob was a fun-loving and caring friend, his circle of favorite friends, small but strong. His sense of humor, warm smile, love of learning and teaching as well as his adventurous spirit will be missed.
Bob is survived by his brother Harry Mullin; his nieces and nephews: Dave (Rose) Wilder, Mike (Donna) Wilder, Laurie Meyers, Jeanna (Albert) Williams, Harry “Billy” Mullin, Jamie (Nicole) Mullin and Mary Pike; many great-nieces and nephews and his best friends Cindy Hearl, Sharon (Karl) Tipton, and Barb Wargel. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Nora Wilder, his infant brother Albert and his dogs, Pebbles and Bam Bam.
Visitation for Bob will be held on Tuesday August 17, 2021 from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. at Reyers North Valley Chapel where a funeral service will immediately follow at 2:00 p.m.
