Roderick L. Schmidt

Roderick L. Schmidt, age 90, of Grand Rapids, passed away Wednesday, May 18, 2016 surrounded by his family. He is preceded in death by his parents Val and Marcy Schmidt, his daughter Ellen Elizabeth, his brother Bob and sisters Judi Palmer and Mary Robach. Rod will be deeply missed by his loving wife of 67 years, Bernice, their children Chas Schmidt of North Carolina, Beverly (Earl) Gager of Michigan, James Schmidt of California, 8 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his sister Sr. Paula Schmidt CSsR of New York, his brother Thomas Schmidt of Florida, sisters-in-law Joy Sorenson and Virginia Sorenson, brother-in-law Ken Robach, and many nieces, nephews and friends. Rod was a member of the 1943 graduating class of Catholic Central and went on to attend college at U of M. He also served his country in the United States Army during WWII. Rod retired from the Postal Service after 39 years of dedicated service. He and Bernice loved to take trips and go dancing. Rod also had the hobby of gardening. Please join the family for a time of visitation on Sunday, May 22, 2016 from 2-4pm and 7-9pm at Reyers North Valley Chapel. A funeral mass will be held at St. Jude Catholic Church on Monday, May 23, 2016 at 11am, with an hour visitation prior at church. Interment will be at Fairplains Cemetery.
