The youngest of four siblings, Scott had a gift for carpentry and fixing just about anything around the house. This ability turned into a lifelong passion of helping others. He graduated from Creston High School in 1978 and later graduated from the University of Michigan with a master’s degree in architecture and urban planning.
Scott was always quick to lend a hand. He owned and rented out numerous properties to dozens of tenants, but was far from just a “landlord.” He was a renovator, confidant, voice of reason, mentor, son, brother, uncle and friend to all. He could solve just about any problem and if couldn’t, he “had a guy” you could call.
In his adult life, Scott worked for the city of Grand Rapids, helped unhoused people at the Dwelling Place, was a commercial real estate appraiser and volunteered at Big Brothers Big Sisters. Scott was a father figure and close friend to his niece Réna throughout her life. He was also Big Brother for 20 years to his Little Brother, Jordan Moreau, and taught him to ride a bike, make award-winning school projects and most importantly, to be a good person.
Scott was the primary caregiver for his father in the final years of his life with help from his sisters and his Aber-Team, Lorai Wilson and Lesa Nienhuis. He enjoyed hosting Fourth of July parties at his Ferrysburg house, going on spontaneous adventures and making homemade gifts and cards for loved ones. He knew the lyrics to every Beatles song and every Kramer quote from “Seinfeld.” He was constantly fixing up old houses and restoring them to their original architectural style leaving a forever mark on everything and everyone he touched. Scott is and will forever be greatly missed.
Scott was preceded in death by his brother, Allan G. Busse; his father, Ralph John Busse and his mother, Margie Therese Busse. He is survived by his sisters, Pamela Marie Hamp (husband, Lonn Hamp) and Teresea Ann Schlump (husband, David Schlump); nieces, Réna VanPutten (husband, Brett VanPutten), Elyse Schlump and Clarissa Ramade (husband, Satish Ramade); nephews, Josh Schlump (wife, Ashley Schlump), Daniel Schlump and Garth Hamp; great-nieces, Sienna VanPutten, Payton Schlump, Ahanna Ramade and Ariya Ramade; and great-nephews, Brady VanPutten and Rishi Ramade.
