Fuhs, Scott William, Sergeant First Class (SFC) passed away on July 9, 2018 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his stillborn daughter, Rachel Elizabeth; his brother, Brian Edward; his Grandparents, and his Aunt Sandy Price. He is survived by his wife, Amy; his son, Jack; his parents, William and Carol Fuhs; his sister Mya (Shawn) Collins and their children Jonathan, Matthew, Riley, Aaron and Nora. He also left behind many uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends. Scott was born on May 1, 1972 in Grand Rapids, MI. He graduated from Forest Hills Northern High School in 1990. He earned his Black Belt in the first degree, in the martial arts style of Tae Kwon Do. He is a graduate of Grand Valley State University, class of 1996, with a Bachelor of Science degree in History and Political Science. After 9/11, Scott realized his dream and joined the Army Reserves at age 29. Like his father William, and his family before him, he wanted to carry on the tradition of service in the Army since World War I. He enlisted in the United States Army on November 16, 2002. He completed the Civil Affairs Specialist Course and graduated on the Commandants List in August 2003. Scott served three consecutive years in Iraq. He loved his job and was engaged in community building as well as fighting alongside his fellow special operators. When it came time to reenlist, he transitioned to the regular army. He also had an 11-month combat deployment to Afghanistan. He also served in Operation Enduring Freedom in Trans-Sahara (Africa). This was a non-combat deployment. Culminating his 15 years of dedicated service, Scott earned his airborne wings (6/13/08) and expert shooting badges for the pistol and rifle. He was also recognized with the Combat Action Badge while serving with the 1st Infantry Div., two Bronze stars, and a Purple Heart for injuries sustained from an IED planted as a road-side bomb in 2005. He earned two Meritorious Service medals, the Good Conduct medal with 5 notes, four Army Commendation medals, and 5 Army Achievement medals. His combat deployments were annotated by the award of the Afghanistan Service medal with one battle star and the Iraq Service medal with four battle stars. Scott accumulated 23 medals and many awards in his lifetime. Scott loved reading about history, cars, and guns. Scott also learned to skydive at the former Skydive Hastings. He made many lasting friends all over the world and touched many lives in his short 46 years. He was always there to help no matter who you were, he had a very positive attitude, and never gave up. Scott was active duty when he passed. He was with B Company, 91st Civil Affairs Battalion (Airborne). He fought the hardest battle of his life against Multiple Myeloma. He remained positive for 14 months fighting this cancer, but now his work on earth is done. A Memorial Service was held for Scott at JFK Memorial Chapel on July 19th, 2018 at Fort Bragg. He will be buried at Arlington Cemetery with full Military Honors. A funeral service will be held at St Alphonsus Church, 224 Carrier Street, Grand Rapids, Michigan on Friday, August 10, 2018 at 11:00 am. Father Brian Johnson will officiate.
