Stuart spent the majority of his career restoring antique wooden speedboats. He attended Faith Lutheran Church in Grand Rapids, MI and enjoyed providing custom artwork for their monthly church newsletter.
A talented artist, Stuart enjoyed many hobbies, especially anything “old.” For the past forty years, he could be found in the garage restoring his 1957 Studebaker Golden Hawk. In addition, he restored many of his own speedboats and would take them out skiing on the local lakes and rivers.
As a lifelong audiophile he served as a DJ for his college radio station and in retirement, he built his own record player and vintage stereo system. He was always an avid cyclist and shared this passion with his wife and daughter. Some of the fondest memories were family vacations riding bikes around Mackinac Island.
Stuart was always an animal lover and spent his adult life as a vegetarian. On his daily commute to Whitehall he would often stop to help turtles cross US 31. Over the years, he adopted three cats that appeared on the family’s doorstep, always becoming their “favorite human”. In recent years, Stuart devoted himself to saving the monarchs.
He was very intelligent, caring and meticulous in many things and so reserved that sometimes people didn’t always get his sense of humor. Once he got to know you though, his funny, sarcastic and quirky side came out.
Stuart is survived by his only child, Jennifer Henderson (Wade Rhinehart) of Harrisburg, PA; his “block child”, Karen Todd (Justin) of Stanwood, MI and her children Hailey Christian, Alyssa Christian, Hayden Todd, and Abigail Todd; and many loving family and friends, including his sister-in-law, Virginia Tilly, of Fort Myers, FL; and brother, James Henderson (Heidi Metzger) of Pinckney, MI.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Margaret Henderson, of Fremont, MI and his wife, Kathryn Henderson, of Grand Rapids, MI.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Crash’s Landing or Faith Lutheran Church.
