Born in Grand Rapids on June 13, 1944, Sue passed away peacefully from complications due to Alzheimer’s disease on May 18, 2018. She graduated from Kelloggsville High School. Sue met the love of her life, Bruce Spencer, when they both worked at Miracle Mart on 28th Street. They were married on April 4, 1964 and had their only son, Bruce Jr., two years later. But she had many "adopted" children and especially grandchildren, all of whom she loved unconditionally. Bruce and Sue had a very full life together. Early in their marriage they camped frequently throughout Michigan. In 1985 they bought a sailboat and joined the Muskegon Yacht Club. They spent the next 30 summers sailing, racing and cruising, on Muskegon Lake and throughout Lake Michigan. More recently they have enjoyed camping and traveling both in Michigan and throughout the United States in their motor home. They have spent winters in Texas and Florida, traveled to Hawaii, Venezuela, Ireland, cruised the Caribbean on a sailboat and made lifelong friends everywhere. After her son was born, Sue was a stay-at-home mother, a job she cherished with all her heart. She also had many hobbies over the years including sewing, ceramics, knitting and crochet. Sue was preceded in death by her parents, Jerry & Della (Bont) Koning; inlaws, Lynn & Dorothy (Grooters) Spencer; her sister and brother-in-law Jackie & Howard Hancock and brother-in-law David Steinhauer; nieces Kathie Kolkema Siefert, Cathy Malone and Cristine Wykstra. Sue will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 54 years, Bruce, her son Bruce (Patti) Spencer, Jr. and beloved grandsons William & Chance Spencer. Also surviving are sisters Geraldine (Timothy) McCarthy, Patricia Steinhauer, Kathleen (Sam King) Heukels; brothers and sisters-in-law Dorothy Langford, Carol (George) Mandigo, Doug (Zayna) Spencer, Joyce Hay and Terry (Tracy) Spencer. The family wants to offer their heartfelt gratitude for the wonderful care Sue received over the last couple of years to Dawn Kelly and at the end from both Spectrum Health Hospice Care and Green Acres Assisted Living facility in Cedar Springs. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association. Visitation will be at the Reyers North Chapel Funeral Home, 2815 Fuller Ave. NE, Grand Rapids from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm on Thursday, May 24, 2018. There will also be a visitation from 10-11 am on Friday, May 25, with the funeral following at 11 am at Orchard View Church of God, 2777 Leffingwell Ave. NE, Grand Rapids.
