Sumiko Sato Cox, passed away on January 13, 2017. She was born in Tokyo, Japan on October 10, 1927. She married Fred Cox, while he was stationed in Japan during the Occupation and moved to the U.S. more than 50 years ago with her husband and daughter. The family was in Grand Rapids when Fred retired from the Army. Sumiko decided they were not moving again, so Grand Rapids became her home.
Sumiko, known to friends and family as Sue, Suzie or Baba, was a tiny lady with a big personality who made an impact on the lives of all who knew her. After Fred passed away in 1984, she began working in the clothing alterations business and was working into her 80’s. She never had to advertise. She also expanded her flower gardens and had a beautiful yard every summer. She was devoted to her grandsons, attending youth hockey games and band concerts from elementary school through their high school and college years. A few years ago, she said she has had a good, full life, and when she dies, she wanted the announcement to say that she died of old age – no other details.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, June and Edward Wysocki, grandsons Brian M. Fitzsimons and Victor S.A. Fitzsimons and a number of friends, especially Kristi Rasikas, Don Fitzsimons and Albert Rasikas . Per her wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial luncheon to celebrate her life will take place at a later date. Condolences may be offered at www.reyersnorthvalleychapel.com Memorial contributions may be made in Sumiko’s name to: GR Makers, 401 Hall St. SW, Grand Rapids MI 49503. Her sewing equipment and supplies have been donated to this organization so that people can learn how to sew. Or, a contribution to a charity of your choice will always be appreciated. Better yet, this spring, plant a garden or patio pot with beautiful flowers in her memory.
The family wishes to thank the staffs of Emmanuel Hospice and Clark on Franklin for their very caring services and allowing Sumiko to maintain her spunky personality and dignity the last few months of her life.
