Obituary of Thomas Ward Bayer
Thomas Ward Bayer, age 80, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on March 9, 2029. Tom was born in Grand Rapids on September 7, 1942 to Lawrence & Dorothy (Chapman) Bayer. He graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1960 and joined the Navy. While proudly serving his country, Tom worked aboard the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt as the ship’s photographer. After his honorable discharge, he returned home and to school. He went to Ferris State College for graphic design and eventually completed his bachelor’s degree in engineering from Western Michigan University. In 1966, Tom married the love his life, the former Mary Saur. The couple raised two sons and were devoted to each other for almost 57 years. A good provider, Tom spent his career working as a technician on large scale medical equipment such as X-Ray machines for hospitals and medical offices. As a member of the Jaycees, he was the chairman who helped his chapter earn a state level award for assisting families with protecting their homes from fire. When he wasn’t working, Tom would be found outside. He loved working on his house, maintaining his lawn and tinkering on cars. He loved traveling and camping. A lifelong photographer, Tom’s favorite subject was gorgeous sunrises and beautiful sunsets. Documenting life with photos led to one his favorite hobbies of researching his family’s genealogy. Tom will be remembered for being devoted to his family and putting his best self out to the world. Tom is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary; his sons Tom, Jr. and Edward (Yvette) Bayer; his grandchildren: Nickolette (Josh) Moore, Rachael (Travis) Stevens, Logan & Bradley Bayer; several great grandchildren; his brother William Bayer, and sister Alice Newsome as well as many other relatives. Cremation has taken place, and burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery. Private family services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to Faith Hospice or an organization of your choice.
