Elton Gibson, Jr. was born February 23, 1940 in Muskogee, Oklahoma. Elton was number 13 of 14 children. His parents worked a 40 acre farm. Times were hard for the family. In 1950 the family moved to Kansas City hoping for better conditions. In 1960 he joined Local 663 and began to work construction. He worked on many projects over the years and became known for his ability to shovel concrete.
He married Donna in 1970. They have 3 children MaChele Swank, Chance Gibson and Tamela Gibson. He worked with the union through the 70s and 80s to help workers and the community. In 1993 Local 663 hired Elton as a business agent. He worked with the problems on inner city project sights and put together groups of volunteers to address workers’ concerns. They put out signs, manned telephone banks and walked door to door passing out literature. They got up early on days off, in heat or cold, in an effort to make things better for future. He worked with many organizations CBTU and A Phillip Randolph. He retired in 2003 but stayed active with the union and politics.
The family now includes 8 grandchildren and 6 great-grand children. He is survived by one sister Eunice Jones of Kansas City and numerous nieces and nephews.
