Nina Whitney McComas, 87, of Grandview, MO passed away March 2, 2014. Visitation 1-2 pm and the funeral service will follow at 2:00 pm Friday, March 7 at McGilley & Georg Funeral Home 12913 Grandview Rd. in Grandview. Burial will be in Mt. Moriah Cemetery South, Kansas City, MO.
Nina Whitney McComas was born on 30 January 1927 to Walter C. Whitney and Florence McWilliams in Kansas City, MO. She married Gerald B. McComas on 8 March 1942 in Plattsburg, MO. They had 4 children: Gerald, Jr., John, Mike and Patti.
Nina retired from General Services Administration in 1987. Prior work included the downtown shop of Russell Stovers Candy. After retirement, Nina took up her hobbies on a full-time basis. She tended a large vegetable garden. Her grandchildren received new clothes. Nina became interested in family history and took several trips to do research. She also traveled across the country to attend Avon Collectors conventions. She collected Hallmark Christmas ornaments.
Nina was a member of the First Baptist Church in Grandview, MO., and a member of the Eastern Star. Later, she joined the Southside Optimist club. There were many other charitable projects where she devoted her time: Grandview Assistance Program; Bears on Patrol; Grandview Academy for Community Policing; Grandview Alternative School’s Project Warmth and Blankets for Katrina Survivors; Grandview Youth Court.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Gerald, her son, John, and Long-time friend Walter Cook. She will be greatly missed by her children, Garry of Overland Park, KS, Mike and wife Angela of Grandview, and Patti of Grandview; and her grandchildren, Robert and Richard Clark, and John, Gerald, and RuthAnn McComas, Jeff and Gavin McComas, brother, Jim Whitney, and sister, Evelyn Hall.
