

Giles - Charles Frederick Giles ("Fred"), age 97, passed away on September 15, 2013, after a brief battle with cancer. Fred was preceded in death by his wife Eileen, the love of his life, in 1996, sister and brother-in-law, Chum and Opal Hershberger, and his parents Russell and Hazel Giles.
He proudly served his country in the Air Force in WWII in the Philippines. Fred had a long career with Fisher Body in Kalamazoo and then later at the 36th Street Plant in Wyoming. After his father passed away in 19A�48, Fred and Eileen took over and helped his mother run their family business on South Division Avenue at Home Acres for many years. In retirement, Fred and Eileen moved to L Lake in Baldwin and enjoyed their time there, as L Lake has always held a special place in the hearts of the Giles and Hershberger families. Fred was a long-time member of South United Methodist Church in Wyoming.
Fred will be lovingly remembered by nephews and nieces, Gordon and Candice Hershberger of Talking Rock, Georgia, Karen and Randy Piper of Wyoming, Michigan, Bud Kraft of Hudsonville, Michigan, Nancy (Don) Hamelink of Dunwoody, Georgia, Melene (Barry) LaLonde of Lansing, Michigan, and Judy Hershberger of Ellijay, Georgia. Also surviving Fred is his beloved sister-in-law, Melba Kraft of Byron Center, as well as grand-nieces and grand-nephews Chad Hershberger, Betsy (Chad) Kelly, Kelli (Bryan) Oosting, Scott Piper, Philip (Ellen) Bowman, Holli (Christopher) Campbell and Troy (Rachel ) Bowman. Fred will be missed by all those who knew and loved him.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 21, at Cook Memorial Chapel (East building), 4235 Prairie Street, S.W., Grandville. Relatives and friends may meet Fred's family from 8:45 -9:45 a.m. prior to service at Cook Memorial Chapel. Interment will be at Rest Lawn Memorial Park, Grand Rapids. The family would like to thank Fred's many friends and caregivers for their wonderful care and support at Sunset Manor over the last six years, as well as the staff at Brookcrest during his final month. In memory of Fred, contributions may be made to Sunset Manor Benevolent Fund or South United Methodist Church, Wyoming, Michigan.
