David Bruinsma, age 83, passed away peacefully in the presence of his family on Wednesday, May 21, 2025. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Marian Bruinsma. David is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of 41 years, Joanne Bruinsma; daughter, Elizabeth (Ralph) Wang; beloved grandchildren Anna, Celine, and a grandson soon to arrive; and his younger brother, Jack Bruinsma.
David graduated from Ottawa Hills High School and continued his education at Calvin College earning his bachelor’s degree in history. He later received his master’s degree in education from Michigan State University. A highlight of his early years was a meaningful three-month journey through Europe with his father—an experience that became a treasured memory and deepened their bond.
David spent the majority of his career teaching history and geography at Newhall Junior High in Wyoming, Michigan. Even after retirement, his passion for learning and mentorship remained strong, leading him to substitute teach throughout western Michigan until the age of 75.
A lifelong learner and history enthusiast, David found joy in family trips to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and the Mackinac Straits, and in quiet evenings playing Trivial Pursuit or watching his favorite program, Jeopardy! He was known for his generosity, selflessness, and unwavering love for his family. Above all, David’s life was guided by his deep Christian faith. A man of the Word, he lived out his beliefs with humility and grace, leaving a lasting impression on all who knew him. He will be dearly missed.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 28, 2025, at Cook Memorial Chapel, 4235 Prairie St. SW, Grandville, Michigan. Visitation will take place 10 a.m., one hour prior to the service.
