Life will never be the same without you. I was just a kid when I lost you and now I have kids of my own. I make sure they know how awesome their great grandpa Don is. I even named my oldest son after you, his name is August “Eugene”. My kids would’ve loved you so much. Im sad they can’t meet you but I promise I’ll make sure they know who you are through the stories I tell them of my childhood. You were the best grandpa in the world. Thank you for everything. I hope both of my sons are like you when they grow up. It’s hard losing your best friend so young, it’s still hard on me to this day. I’ll always love you forever and I’ll never forget you. Hey grandpa, it’s your granddaughter Summer. It’s been years since you’ve passed, I was a kid when I lost you and now have kids of my own. I just want you to know how heartbroken I am everyday I don’t get to spend with my best friend/you. I wish my kids got to meet you, they would have LOVED you just like I do. I named my oldest son August Eugene “Eugene” after you of course. I love you forever and I’ll make sure to tell my kids about the most awesome grandpa I got to grow up having. I miss you so much and life hasn’t been the same without you.

My family will miss our very own Mister Rogers in our Neighborhood. The big deep voice, special whistle and curbside chats. Don shared my interest in Star Trek and kept me posted on any new info. He was a good friend and neighbor.

Dear Vi, Russ, Randie, Summer, Tim and all: What a shock to read in today's GR Press about Don's death. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all and have been since learning about his illness. What great memories we have of the many, many years that you came to Platte Lake and the good times we have had. It will not be the same without him. So many of the other renters have asked about him too. He was such a hard worker and loved his family so very much. We can still see him sitting around the campfire or working on his boat or bringing in his "catch" of fish. Sorry we are at the lake and cannot make it to visitation or the funeral, but we'll be thinking of you at the time. Feel a big HUG from us until we can give you one in person. Viola and family; I am sorry to hear about the passing of your husband and father. The one memory that I have is when Don got your engagement ring and we put it in many boxes of different sizes and wrapped each one and made you search each and everyone till you found the ring. Again, my deepest sympathy to you and your family.
