

HOEKSTRA - Doug “Hookey” Hoekstra, age 84, of Jenison, formerly of Grandville, went to be with his Lord June 6, 2016. He was preceded in death by his parents Jenny and C.R. Hoekstra, parents-in-law George and Adreana Ahlberg.
He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Charlotte; children Doug Jr. (Vickie) Hoekstra, Mary (Loren) Shuman, and Mike (Bonnie) Hoekstra; grandchildren Doug Hoekstra III (Terry), Sarah (Tad) Bultema, Mike Jr. (Stephanie) Hoekstra, Mark (Heather) Hoekstra, Carrie (Myron) Varouhakis, Joel (Julie) Shuman, Laura (James) Powell, great-grandchildren Jacob, Anna, Abby, Nick, Olivia, Emily, David, Henry, Caroline, Tony, Laife, Corbin, Ayan, Kasen and Adreana; his twin sister, Dodie Young; sister-in-law Marlene Houseman; and many nieces and nephews.
Doug owned and operated Hookey’s Garage & Service Station for 32 years and helped form the Gasoline Dealer’s Association. He was a charter member of Newhall Reformed Church where he served as deacon, elder, Sunday school teacher, youth leader, bus driver and where the family said he loved to sing even though he couldn’t carry a tune. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy Reserves. He loved spending time at Barlow Lake, fishing and boating with his wife, children and grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, June 9, 2016 at the Cook Memorial Chapel (East building), 4235 Prairie St., S.W., Grandville. A time to meet with Doug’s family will be held Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Cook Funeral Home (West Building) and one hour prior to services on Thursday.
