I am very saddened to hear of Doug's untimely death. Please accept my most heartfelt condolensces. Doug's brother Cliff and I were classmates and good friends during our years at Grandville High School. Likewise, Doug was a good friend and classmate to my brother Steve.
 My family and I lost my brother Steve to cancer 24 years ago, on February 28, 1976, just after his 16th birthday and just before Doug's. All during his illness, Doug stood by my brother like none other of his friends would or could. He demonstrated a loyalty and depth of love very rare in one so young, even far beyond Steve's passing.
 Every year for I believe 10 straight years, Doug faithfully placed a moving memorial in the Grand Rapids Press on the anniversary of my brother's death that paid tribute to their friendship and the bond that had grown between them.
 I just wanted you to know how much Doug's generous acts of love and loyalty meant to my family over the years. We still often mention it when talking about my brother.
 This demonstrated an integrity and strength of character that I have no doubt carried over into his adult years and manifested itself freely to his family and friends. Please know that our prayers are extended to your entire family as you grieve your loss.
 Even though many years have passed, we will always remember Doug as a wonderful person who as a teenager was an important part of my family's life during and even after a most difficult time for us. May God's peace and comfort be strong with you in the weeks and months ahead.

Our daughter, Elizabeth and your daughter, Ashley played softball together back in 1995 and appreciated Phyllis' help with the team and Doug and Matt talked "Ford Bronco's" at every game due to Matt having just fixed one up and Doug hoping to fix one up soon. Our sympathy goes out to Phyllis and the girls...our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

I am so sorry to hear about Doug. I did not know him, but I know Orville. My grandpa, Russell was a brother to Cliff. I just wanted to send my sympathy to his wife and daughters. I was not able to make it to the visitation or funeral, but my dad Bert Rummelt did make it to the visitation.

I'm deeply sadden / sorry over the loss our good freind Doug. Doug was a remarkable man,... family first ! He enjoyed his time spent with family and/or friends either helping out or just having a good time together. Would drop everything at the drop of a hat to help out.He loved the outdoors passionately. Doug will be missed by alot of people but none so more than his family. You have my deepest condolences. Doug will not be forgotten, we will keep his memory alive forever. My prayers are with you. So sorry to hear about Doug. He will be missed by anyone that ever knew him. Although I didn't share his love for fishing I helped him with his boat a couple of years ago and he was always more than willing to do anything he could if I needed help. He will be missed by all of us. Jeep
