Elmer J. Nies

NIES - Mr. Elmer Joseph "Joe" Nies, PE, passed away Thursday, June 12, 2008. Born in Fort Wayne Indiana, Joe had served his country with the US Army during the Korean era. He was a Purdue University graduate with a degree in Civil Engineering and co-founder and partner of Meyers, Bueche and Nies, Inc. of Jenison. Joe was an outdoorsman, avid reader, and a history buff. He enjoyed his Knights of Columbus activities and will be remembered for being a generous volunteer for many charitable causes.

Joe was preceded in death by his sister, Mariellen Welfle. He will be deeply missed by his wife of 49 years, Doris; children, Barbara David Burkhardt of Naperville, IL, Susan Dennis Anest Nies of Glen Ellyn, IL, Carol Stephanie May Nies of Downing, WI, and James Catherine Nies of Carmel, IN; grandchildren, Anne, Daniel, and Mary Claire Burkhardt, Isaiah May, and Robert and Elizabeth Nies.

Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Tuesday, 11 a.m. at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 2700 Baldwin St., Jenison, with Rev. Ronald Hutchinson presiding.

Relatives and friends may meet Joe's family Monday from 6-9 p.m. at the Cook Funeral Home west building, 4235 Prairie SW, Grandville, and Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the Mass at church.
