In 1962, Ernst immigrated to the United States, where he built a life grounded in faith, family, and passion for his work. A devoted family man, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Charlotte Kay Otto, and his son, Ernst Justus Otto. He is survived by his daughters, Jennifer Otto and Tracy Lawrence (Bob), and his Grandchildren Lucas Jonker (Tori), Kaleb Jonker (Dani), Roman Jonker, & Holly Lawrence, who will forever cherish his memory.
Ernst had a distinguished career as an aeronautical engineer at GE Aerospace, where he designed electrical test equipment for airplanes, playing a vital role in supporting advancements in aviation and aerospace. He also designed and assisted in the programming of instrument clusters for US military fighter jets and some space shuttles for NASA.
Beyond his professional life, Ernst was deeply involved in his church, his community and his passions. For over 30 years, he shared his love of music as a member of the Grand Rapids Metropolitan Choir of Praise and at his church as a member of the choir, praise team and as a solo violinist. He was also an active member of the Muskegon Conservation Club for more than 40 years, where he enjoyed sailing and the camaraderie of fellow enthusiasts. His lifelong love of sailboats, airplanes and the outdoors was a testament to his adventurous spirit and his appreciation for the beauty of engineering and nature. Ernst enjoyed repairing and restoring cars and always had a handful of projects at home to tinker on in his spare time.
A man driven by his Christian faith, Ernst lived as a humble servant of God, inspiring those around him with his kindness, integrity, hard work and unwavering devotion.
