Eunice graduated from Kalamazoo Christian High School in 1952 and shortly thereafter she met Donald Buning at a church roller skating party and the two soon became a couple. Don was truly the love of her life. They were married in 1955 and welcomed four children over the next ten years.
Eunice worked various part-time jobs throughout her life. One of her favorites was as a clerk at Georgetown Township Library where she made some dear friends. Eunice’s primary focus, however, was always her husband, children, and eventually grandchildren. She was an excellent listener and a calming presence to be around. She served as a care elder in her church and always found ways to encourage others. Being surrounded by educators all her life, Eunice always loved learning and instilled that love in her children as well. She enjoyed reading, traveling, and spending time with her family and friends. After Don retired, they were able to spend many happy winters in Florida, playing tennis, hiking, and exploring with their Florida friends.
Eunice was a thoughtful daughter, devoted wife, loving mother, and caring grandmother. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and siblings Helen (DeVries) Bos and Robert DeVries. She is survived by her children David (Sue) Buning of Cary, NC, Douglas (Kathy) Buning of Olathe, KS, Daniel (Beth) Buning of Jamestown, and Rebecca (David) Purnell of Zeeland; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Visitation for Eunice will be at Cook Memorial Chapel in Grandville, MI from 12-2 p.m. Saturday, May 3, 2025, with a funeral to follow at 4 p.m. Memorial contributions may be given in Eunice’s memory to Corewell Health Hospice and Palliative Care. The family welcomes memories and messages at www.cookcaresgrandville.com in their guestbook online.
