It's a joy to recall many times when our Grand Rapids First Church "Fellowship Group" included Eunice.  One special memory is of the time we met, in costume, at an old, one room schoolhouse;  Eunice was our teacher, of course!

Many dogs were blessed through the years by her loving, devoted care.  I remember a beautiful, big painting of one of her favorites.

Since I first read this, I've been contemplating my response.  I consider Miss Gunn as my most influential instructor even through college. My classmate,Marilyn, has already pointed out how many years have slipped by so some of these memories as vague. They might even be confused with another teacher. Nevertheless , I'll attribute them to Miss Gunn.  
  I remember reading Homer out loud to start the day. She praised what I'd I now consider
really poor poetry. The best thing she ever did was kick me out of class. I was a pretty bright little boy. She thought I might get bored in class. In some categories, i was way ahead of the curve. She sent me down to the Central library as an assistant. I think I spent Tuesday and  Thursday afternoon checking students out and filing returned books. I can still find my way around the Dewey decimal system . A somewhat useless skill now that KDL has abandoned it. 
  I see she earned a Masters a few years after I left. I'm pretty sure she had me help her. She handed me books that she wanted me to read and report on. " Flatland" about a 2 dimensional society and "Squareland"  the corresponding 3 dimensional one. Small author  but fairly short books. I reread them years later and thought it was pretty advanced stuff for a 5th grader. I was then that I realized they were likely her classwork. She may have read them and passed them on as she thought I might be interested then again, she may have avoided them by handing them to me. Perhaps they were on the suggested reading list on not required textbooks. I do remember lots of additional reading suggested by my professors.
  I was an avid reader and used that knowledge to build plastic models airplanes. We would talk about them and the stories behind. I'd be quite certain that she arranged for me to assemble a diorama using them which was displayed in the Central lobby showcase over the summer. 
  She was one of the people who inspired a great thirst for knowledge  and lust for books that continued to this day. If my house ever burns, it will likely go for days. One last thing, I was surprised a few year ago when Marilyn told we when she was born. She was just about the same age as my parents - I thought of her as about 10 years younger.

Miss Gunn was my favorite teacher of all time. I was in her 5th grade class at Central Elementary. She was always coming up with innovative ways to teach. For example, she painted sequential numbers on the playground and we jumped the numbers to learn multiplication. She and one of her classes took the marine hymn, The Halls Of Montezuma, and changed the words to make a school song, “From the Halls of Grandville Central........”
In 1978, at graduation rehearsal, all of her students were given a gift and a note, from Miss Gunn congratulating us. She tracked us all those years!!  I was truly blessed to have been her student. She truly made a difference in countless lives in this crazy world of ours. I will light a candle for this new “angel” in heaven. May she Rest In Peace.

"Miss Gunn" was my 3rd grade teacher at central elementary and taught me how to write cursive and multiply. I have many fond memories of her and she impacted the lives of numerous Grandville students. Im an attorney now and practice in Grandville at bolhouse law, just down the street from where she lived. Every time I sign my name I'm reminded of the wonderful teacher who taught me how. What a legacy she has left in our community.

Miss Gunn was a friend of the families and my 3rd grade teacher.   I will treasure memories forever.  Always loved when she brought the dogs in to school I got to do her hair at brookcrest and we would visit her my mom and myself my mom used to clean for her and also do room mother I will miss her dearly she was a big part of my life

My condolences to Tom. She was lucky to have you caring for her all of those years.She was my teacher 54 years ago. I was blessed to reconnect with her after she moved next to my mom at Oakcrest. We enjoyed many conversations about the old days. She remembered many of my classmates and even had our grade book with her. The pictures of her past dogs hung on the walls.
