When we think of Jake we best remember his sincere SMILE that came from within. In all of our business dealings with GROOT BLDRS we have always felt a sincere and honest relationship. He was an awesome christian man who will be missed by many. Knowing Bob best of all we send our sincere sympathies to you,Bob, your mom and the rest of your family. Losing our loved ones is so hard, but we know Jake is happy and that he wants you all to be happy too.

Jean & family,
 I am sorry I was out of the country and could not speak to you personally at the service. Jake was a kind and generous man who touched everyone he ever met. He will be missed in many ways but I know he is in a much better place. I will never forget his thoughtfulness to call me a week ago and share his feelings with me about something that touched him. I just wanted to say thanks to all of you who have either sent flowers or cards or notes or food or visited at the funeral home.
 My father was a great man and left a great legacy in both his faith and his actions. It is said that actions speak louder than words. I believe my father's voice has been heard by many and will be for a long time.
 He is no longer on earth with us, but is in heaven with his father, as well as his earthly parents and so many that have gone before. He leaves a space that will be impossible to fill, but we will follow in his footsteps and build on the foundation he laid.
 And that foundation is Christ.

I remember "oom Jaap" as one of my three uncles who emigrated to the US in the fifties. As a boy I met them during their infrequent visits to their old country. They brought fancy things like a pencil which you should twist in order to write. And they had a funny accent. I remember one visit of oom Jaap in the seventies I think in which he brought one of his sons. We went to an electronic store and he asked for the bathroom. Literally this means "badkamer", and I did wonder why someone would take a shower when in an electronic store. Since then I learned some more English. Maybe on the same trip I also learned that American boys do not eat until the ketchup arrives, tipping waiters is normal in America, and that I couldn't make a salto on a trampoline. This last learning moment was due to my father Simon oom Jaap's brother, who asked me to try a salto. Unfortunately, I landed on my head. This happened in a cold outdoor public swimming pool. The area is now turned into a golf course. This may be symbolic for the continuous exchange of people, goods and habits that occurred and occurs between my oom Jaap's old and new country.
 My own father visited the US a few times. He was not much of a traveller, and that will have added to the big impression seeing this country and his two brothers made on him.
 Two three? years ago I had the pleasure of meeting oom Jaap in Wageningen. He told passionate about his business, and showed me pictures of houses that were build under his company's supervision. If you're that passionate at that age about what you've done the larger part of your life you probably can look back on a good life.
 I wish oom Jaap's wife and children the good life oom Jaap certainly wished for them.
