

James Carlton Austin, age 92 of White Cloud and formerly of Wyoming, passed away from a broken heart October 24, 2023. He was preceded in death by Lola, his wife and best friend, in August 2023; parents Carlton and Florence; and sisters Lora and Marie. He is survived by son, Bob (Brenda) Austin; daughter, Julie Cross; grandchildren Liz (Rick) England, Cody (Joslyn) Cross, Courtney Austin; great-grandchildren Sierra and Bryson Cross, Shelby (Ashley), Makenzie and Landen England; beloved sister, Jean Jacobs; many special nieces, nephews, and “adopted family” Stephanie, Jordynn, Maddy, and Lilly LaBelle.
Jim graduated from Wyoming Park High School and worked as a mechanical engineer in the private sector for several years at Haskelite Manufacturing, Evans Products, and Rapistan. He also served in the Wyoming Fire Department, beginning his career as a paid-on-call firefighter in 1953 and finishing as Fire Chief in 1995.
Jim lived his entire life in service and dedication to his country, his community, and his church. Jim served in the United States Marine Corp, volunteered as a mentor for elementary school students, and at the Grand Rapids Public Museum, delivered meals to the elderly with Meals on Wheels. In addition, he served on the board for the Big Star Lake Association and Newhall Community Church, was a long-standing member of various fire organizations, taught numerous fire courses throughout West Michigan, sang in the church choir and traveled on mission trips. He also enjoyed creating beautiful woodworking projects, hunting at the deer cabin with Bob and Cody, watching sports on TV, and spending time with family and friends.
A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, November 4, 2023 at Cook Memorial Chapel (East Building), 4235 Prairie Street SW, Grandville, MI 49418. Visitation will be immediately prior to the service from 1-3 p.m. For those unable to attend, the service will be available online.
