With heavy hearts, we share that James Richard Waters—known affectionately as Jim, Jimmie, and lovingly called “Buhpa” by his grandchildren—passed away peacefully on the morning of July 14, 2025, in Jenison, Michigan, at the age of 75.
Jim was born in Chicago, Illinois, and grew up in Brookfield. Following graduation from Lyons Township High School, he served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War, until he was honorably discharged. In 1976, he earned a degree in finance from Northern Illinois University.
After college, Jim spent many years as an insurance underwriter, where he was known for his measured judgment. Beyond his day-to-day work, his true passions lay elsewhere. He was a self-taught history enthusiast, often engaging the family in thoughtful conversation. He maintained a lifelong interest in politics and was the family’s undisputed trivia champion. Sports brought him joy too—especially following the Chicago Cubs, Bears, and NIU Huskies—and he proudly helped coach his children’s baseball and basketball teams.
Jim married Gail Joanne (Pecis) Waters, and together they raised two children: Laura Grace Waters Huddleston, married to Jeffrey Robert Huddleston with their children Sonoma Grace (7) and Gareth James (5); and Brian Christopher Waters, married to Jessica Ann Waters with their children Mya Grace (9) and Isabelle Marie (7).
He is preceded in death by his father, James Relk Waters; mother, Grace; and brother, Timothy. Jim’s warmth, humor, and love left a mark on everyone around him. His “Buhpa” nickname was a badge of affection from his grandkids. Jim loved his country. Those around him admired his loyalty, integrity and intellect.
A celebration of Jim’s life will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 9, 2025 at the Downers Grove First United Methodist Church, in Downers Grove, IL, with visitation from 9:30-10:30 a.m. prior to service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jim’s honor to Breakthrough T1D, in recognition of his brother’s journey with type 1 diabetes. The family welcomes memories and messages at www.cookcaresgrandville.com in their guestbook online.
