Jean Eleanor Blovits (Curtis), age 89, went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, April 4, 2023. Jean was preceded in death by her parents Myron and Evelyn Curtis. She will be remembered by her children Jay Blovits, Lisa DuFrane, Lauri Friar, Jack Blovits, and Greg Blovits; daughters-in-law Ann Blovits (Jay), Terri Blovits (Jack), and Kim Blovits (Greg); grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and many friends.
Jean was a strong, independent woman who always lived on her own terms. She loved her family fiercely and never turned down an opportunity to visit with any and all. No gathering was ever truly complete without her attendance, her laughter, her quirky ways, and her (at times exasperating) selflessness. A gifted writer, she leaves behind a treasure trove of stories and essays for her loved ones to share and remember her distinctive voice and, through it, her presence. Jean was an insatiable historian and devoted many years as an officer for the Daughters of the American Revolution. For her family, Jean could always be counted on for helpful insights into nearly any historical curiosity, as well as the family’s ancestry. She was raised in the states of Massachusetts and Maine, and although she adored her adopted Michigan, she was a proud New Englander. Each trip home reinvigorated her northeast accent to the amusement of her midwestern children and large extended family.
As she raised her five children, she instilled in them a strong work ethic, leading by example. After graduating high school in Stowe, Massachusetts, Jean earned a scholarship to Pierce Secretarial School in Boston where she learned the skills used throughout her career. When her growing family settled in West Michigan, she worked for the Grand Rapids Tree Company and Forest View Hospital before spending over twenty years as a legal secretary at Warner, Norcross, and Judd.
Through her inimitable curiosity, Jean forged her way toward new ideas and further knowledge. Just as her mother Evelyn was known familiarly as the “Twig-Bender,” Jean will be remembered by her family as the “Trail-Blazer.” Equally, her life served as an example of the patience and kindness with which to treat others. She left her life gently and as she wished - on her own terms. In her last moments, she was able to express her love for her family and understand their love for her as she slipped away, surrounded by affection.
Visitation with friends and relatives will take place from 2 - 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 20, 2023 at Cook Funeral Home (West building), 4235 Prairie St. SW, Grandville, MI 49418. In honor of Jean and in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alliance for the Great Lakes (www.greatlakes.org). Interment will be at Fairplains Cemetery. The family welcomes memories and messages in their guest book online at www.cookcaresgrandville.com.
