
John proudly served in the U.S. Army during WWII in France. John served for many years as a Deacon and an Elder at the First Reformed Church in Byron Center. He also served on the school board of the Byron Center Public School for many years.
John was preceded in death by his son, James Luyk and his great grandson, James Porter. John is lovingly remembered by his wife of 63 years, Althea Starr Luyk; his children, Linda Arden Edema of Byron Center, Dan Sue Luyk of Byron Center, Sherry Randy Zandstra of Byron Center, Bev Ron Porter of Rockford; his 15 grandchildren; his 17 great grandchildren; his siblings, Annette Arendsen of Kalamazoo, Joe Ruth Luyk of Grandville; Joanne Oostveen of Sarasota, FL; his sister-in-law, Alma Wolven of Grand Rapids; and his many nieces and nephews.
A time for relatives and friends to visit with John's family will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Cook Funeral Home in Byron Center, 2067 84th St. SW. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at the First Reformed Church in Byron Center, 2456 84th St. SW.
