John Owen Phelps

John Owen Phelps, age 90, went to sleep in Jesus on Thursday, September 5, 2024. John was baptized in Jesus’ name August 1, 1943 and received the gift of the Holy Ghost on June 21, 1947. He cherished his faith and devoted his life to living like his Lord. He faithfully attended the Apostolic Faith Church until his health declined. He served as secretary of the Brotherhood of the Apostolic Faith Church since its inception in 1956 until 2020. John served on the Deacon Board since February of 2000. He married Carol Marie Brisbin on June 28, 1952, and they were faithfully devoted to one another until Carol passed in 2010. John was a passionate University of Michigan fan through and through, an avid golfer, and he enjoyed traveling to Mackinaw with his family and especially loved baking Swedish recipes in honor of his heritage. The family would like to extend a special thank you to his caregivers at Byron Manor, HarmonyCares Hospice, Veterans Administration Home Care, and Home Instead for their care and compassion for John.

John will be deeply missed by his daughter, Michelle Phelps; many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends; and his Apostolic Faith Church family. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carol; mother, Zelda Mendricks; father, Glen Phelps; stepfather, Jack Mendricks; brothers Denton and David; and sisters Gloria and Sally.

A funeral service remembering John’s life will be held 12 p.m. Tuesday, September 10, 2024 at Apostolic Faith Church, 1935 44th St. SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49508, with visitation from 11-11:45 a.m. prior to the service.
