Jose was an inspiration to us all. He was the perfect example of the kind of student that makes me love my job as a teacher. I looked forward to seeing his smiling face when he walked into my Life Skills classroom. He was hard working and responsible right up until the very end. Jose, We've been friends since 5th grade. You always new how to make me smile when i didn't even want to laugh. We had so many good times together. You were the greatest friend. Jose, a lot of people have been saying that I didn't know you, but I did. After gym we always played that few extra minutes of soccer together and when we had to do the three minute run you always ran by me. I can not believe people deside to start drama on such a tragic day. People really loved you Jose and I know, I probably never expressed it enough, but you made a really big impact on my life. Jose, WOW! You were such a strong kid. You, were so funny too! I love that about you no matter what you'd always have something funny to say, with a smile on your face. I remember when you'd always chase Sierra && I with the koosh ball. and then we'd be like ew. jose and you'd just laugh or how you and derek would come by Sierra and I in science and just work with us. Jose I will miss your smiling face on the school bus. When I looked up in that big mirror, you always had a smile on your face. You are such a special young man, you made me laugh and now you made me cry, you will greatly be missed! But through our Lord and Savior we know that you are with your heavenly father now and you don't have to deal with the cancer anymore. I feel really blessed to have known you and to be your bus driver. I am so thankful that God arrange me to get to see you in Meijers Friday evening and get to talk to you. That was really special to me, that you heard my voice and came over and found me in the isle. I will miss our "Good Mornings" when I picked you up for school and seeing your smiling face! Jose' When I was told that you were gone, I didn't want to believe it. I had to ask several people before I finally realized they were telling the truth. It still didn't hit me until about an hour later, then I realized that you were actually gone, and I'm never going to see you again. I remember the last thing we said to each other was "I Love You" and my love for you is still continuing and always will. Me and you have been best friends since 3rd grade, and just because you gone doesn't mean that your not my best friend. You still are and you always will be. You are in a better place now as all of us know. I try not to cry about thinking of you being gone, I try to cry about the good times we had while you were here. I love you so much, and I always will, I don't remember a time where you were rude or disrespectful and you would always put anyone else before yourself, and that's what it takes to be a awesome person like you. You are one of a kind. I will see you in heaven.

 Little did I know that when flipping through the paper yesterday my heart would drop when I saw your picture. For privacy purposes I wasn't even allowed to ask your last name when I brought my dog to visit you up in DeVos. I was just told that there was a special request for a golden retriever. I remember one night in particular like it was yesterday. You asked if Bailey would climb in bed with you. I said, "are you sure you want an 80 lb. dog up there?" and you said, "yes". So I stayed with you for almost 2 hours while you drifted in and out of sleep. You were so concerned for the comfort of the dog but I hope you didn't see me cry when you said that it made your stomach feel better if she put the pressure of her head on your belly. Such a simple thing of watching you sleep peacefully, at times gently holding my dog in a headlock, is a joy I'll always treasure. It sounds funny but it was an experience I'll not forget. You woke up that night with a huge smile and said that you had the best nap you had ever had. It's been a while since that evening and I think of you and that smile often. I am glad you aren't in pain anymore and I am sure you are up with the angels but you are certainly a spirit that is going to be terribly missed.

Jose, I sat there today at your funeral and was absolutely amazed at the people of all ages and how dramatically you affected their lives. I believe God put a mission in your young soul and you did everything you could to accomplish it better than any of us could. If we could look for someone to be "real", to be totally selfless, to always put others above yourself, to trully care about those around you no matter what their walk of life, you exemplified it. The number of kids that I saw at your funeral who felt so loved by you and were made to feel important and who felt such loss when you were gone and created a unity among them as a whole. And yet the adults I saw sobbing with such heaviness at no longer being able to see or hear you, including big strong men who I saw had no shame in crying. Jose you were a angel here on this earth. I honestly believe God had you here for a purpose and you fulfilled it. Paul and Sherry, you should be so proud. You have had many trials but you did an excellent job with Jose and his brothers and sisters did too. Blake, I know you were his rock and at some point in your life will wonder where this is to point you in your own life. You also have a special purpose here and I believe will discover that. I pray for all of Byron Center, Dorr and beyond,that what Jose started can be multiplied and that the students really affect a lot of people in their lives. I just felt that I was in a very special place today and over everything was Jose's SMILE. Thank you for today and Thank you for your smile Jose. You are finally at peace and out of pain. We cherish your memory.
