

Lester VandenHoek, age 96, of Grand Rapids, went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, July 25, 2018. He was preceded in death by his parents Tony and Johanna (Dielman) VandenHoek; his first wife, Ethel (Posthuma) VandenHoek; his daughter, Joyce VandenHoek and his son, Jack VandenHoek; one brother and five sisters.
Lester will be lovingly missed by his second wife of five years, Alice (Creek) VandenHoek; his children Judy (Ron) Lachniet, Dan (Pat) VandenHoek, Ruth Ann Hughes; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Lester volunteered for many organizations including Crossroads Bible Institute, Metro Health Hospital, Right to Life of Michigan, Mobile Missionary Assistance Program, and Wycliffe Associates. Lester and Ethel served as foster parents for Bethany Christian Services. He was active in his church and the Kelloggsville Christian School Board. In 2005, Lester was recognized for his volunteer service by receiving The President’s Volunteer Service Award. Lester enjoyed traveling, covering much of the United States and some of Europe. He also enjoyed singing in choir and reading.
Lester proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy on the USS Metcalf during World War II.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 30, 2018 in the Terraces Chapel at Samaritas, 2000 - 32nd Street, SE, Grand Rapids, with visitation one hour prior to service. A private interment will take place at Kent Memorial Gardens.
Memorial contributions in memory of Lester may be made to Crossroads Bible Institute or Right to Life of Michigan.
