Mary graduated from Wyoming Park High School and Blodgett Nursing School. Mary began her nursing career at Blodgett Memorial Hospital where she served as head nurse before returning to work in the burn unit, touching countless lives with her compassion and expertise.
Beyond her professional achievements, Mary was a devoted volunteer at SECOM, Franklin Free Complex, and Kids Hope, always eager to lend a helping hand to people and communities in need. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, and she was a cherished and active member of the Grandville United Methodist Church for over 68 years.
Initially a reluctant traveler, Mary and Martin traveled the world... Kenya, Russia, Egypt, Australia... cherishing every crazy adventure. Mary lived in the beautiful house she and Martin built for 65 years before moving to assisted living last year. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at Rivertown Ridge for their exceptional support and care over the past year.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Martin W. Story; parents Nicholas and Irene S. DeYoung; and her loving sister, Elizabeth (William F.) Dix.
Mary is survived by her three loving children Thomas (Kathleen), David (Mahdokht), and Anne (Thomas). She was the proud grandmother of Ali (Hutton), Patrick, Andrea, and Andrew; the great-grandmother of Willow and FinnyBoy; and aunt to nieces and nephews.
Her legacy of kindness and service will continue to inspire all who knew her. She will certainly be greeted in Heaven with, “Job well done, my good and faithful servant."
A celebration of life service will be held 11:30 a.m. Saturday November 1, 2025, with visitation at 10:30 a.m., at Grandville United Methodist Church, 3140 Wilson Ave. SW, Grandville, Michigan 49418, with a luncheon following the service.
In lieu of flowers and in honor of Mary, contributions may be made to SECOM or Grandville United Methodist Church. The family welcomes memories and messages at www.cookcaresgrandville.com in their guest book online.
