At age 89, Peter D. Bolthouse departed this life the morning of April 27, 2023. Preceding him are his parents Peter and Jeannette Bolthouse; and sisters Francine Nyenhuis, Charlotte Noorthoek, and Donna Brouwer. Surviving are his brother, Robert Bolthouse; four children David (Colleen) Bolthouse, Paul (Sheri) Bolthouse, Cheryl (John) Coaker, and Linda Dertien; five grandchildren Elizabeth, Nicholas, Alex, Tony, and Stephanie Bolthouse; two step-grandchildren Marty (Emily) and Andy (Hillary) Coaker; and a newborn great-grandchild, Harrison Coaker.
Banking, church, and community service were Peter’s life’s work. He retired from Fifth Third (Old Kent) Bank after 47 years of helping Grand Rapids area businesses grow. He diligently supported the Rotary Club of Kentwood and founded the Rotary Club of Allendale, where he put service above self in supporting clean water projects and anti-polio efforts while helping to develop the next generation of leaders. Raised in the Christian Reformed Church, he later joined First Evangelical Covenant Church of Grand Rapids, serving in several roles there, including “holder of the loud pager during sermons” when on-call to support Old Kent’s ATMs.
Peter enjoyed the shores of Lake Michigan and sports. A lifelong Detroit Tigers and Michigan Wolverines fan, he could often be spotted on fall Saturdays at the Big House in Ann Arbor. He also enjoyed attending games at Jenison High School, even after his children graduated.
Peter’s memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, May 26, 2023 at First Evangelical Covenant Church, with visitation at 10 a.m. Interment will occur at Georgetown Township Cemetery.
