Richard John Meindertsma, aged 91, went to be with his Lord Wednesday, May 15, 2024. Richard was preceded in death by his son, John C. Meindertsma and parents John Pietre and Catherine Jantena Meindertsma. He will be remembered by his wife of 69 years, Phyllis; children Rick (Debbie) Meindertsma and Kathi (Paul) Vlachos; daughter-in-law, Lori (Wes) Von Seggern; five grandchildren Matthew (Trishta) Meindertsma, Michael Meindertsma, Kari (Montana) Ottis, Alexandria Meindertsma, Zoé Vlachos; one great-grandchild, Adriana Ottis; and many nieces and nephews.
Born on June 22,1932, Dick grew up on the Grand Rapids “West Side," later proudly serving with the B-29 19th Bomb Group Squadron, Anderson Air Force Base (Guam), in the Western Pacific during the Korean Conflict. Returning home, he raised his family while working in the mechanical contracting field. Dick, not unlike many Dutchmen, enjoyed working in his yard creating too many flowerbeds, as well as making an annual trip with Phyllis to Puerto Escondido, Mexico, during Michigan’s winter months. Having a lifelong affinity for cars, he proudly displayed his treasured 1950s antique dark blue Ford pick-up truck and vintage Ford tractor at many local car shows. Dick kept his mischievous sense of humor right up until the end entertaining and antagonizing the staff of Heather Hills Retirement Community.
Pursuant to Dick’s wishes, cremation has occurred, and there will be a private family celebration of life at a later date with no visitation. Contributions can be made on his behalf to Interim HealthCare of Grand Rapids, 1971 E. Beltline NE, Suite 216, Grand Rapids, Michigan, 49525.
A private family celebration of Richard’s life will commence at a time and date to be determined. The family welcomes memories and messages www.cookcaresgrandville.com in their guest book online.
