Robert Earl Townsend, aged 88, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 6, 2025. He was born in Cadillac, Michigan, in 1937, the son of Earl and Gladys Townsend. A proud graduate of Cadillac High School, class of 1955, Bob went on to serve six years in the United States Navy, both aboard the USS Bennington and in Idaho, where he participated in the technical development program for the nuclear-powered USS Enterprise.
Following his military service, Bob earned multiple degrees in religion and education, then dedicated his life to the pursuit and sharing of knowledge. In retirement, he found great joy in spending time with his grandchildren, reading, boating, and rekindling his passion for photography.
Bob was preceded in death by Carole, his loving wife of 57 years. He is survived by his children Todd, Tim (Kathy), and Amy (Todd); and grandchildren McKenna, Brianna, Charlotte, and Trevor. The family will hold a private celebration of life and internment.
He will be remembered for his intellect, curiosity, and devotion to family.
