Born to a farming family in Kalamazoo, Michigan, he pursued his passion for music at Calvin College and then went on to the University of Michigan where he earned his doctorate degree in music. He was a gifted musician and played trombone for a number of organizations including the Grand Rapids Symphony. Later in life, he became a passionate supporter and promoter of Alcoholics Anonymous and was involved in developing professional programs to help doctors and medical staff overcome substance abuse and chemical dependency. During this time, he earned his second doctorate degree in communications from the University of Texas. In his later years, while living in Texas, Roger served the local community through church and soup kitchens, internationally through Doctors Without Borders, and as a prayer team member with Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, where he loved serving in this capacity. He never lost his love and passion for music and always enjoyed friends, Tex/Mex food, nice clothing, a good cup of coffee, cowboy hats, and all things Texas.
He will be lovingly remembered by his children Jeff (Maria) TeRoller and Dave (Lisa) TeRoller; grandchildren Michael (Helen) TeRoller and Rachel (Grant) Boven; sister, Beverly Pratt; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his two brothers Alvin and Lester Knot.
Keeping with Roger’s lifelong commitment to University of Michigan, his remains will be donated to their medical school in lieu of a funeral. The family welcomes memories and messages at www.cookcaresgrandville.com in their guest book online.
