Dr. Cowden and Mrs. Cowden, I have just heard this. My heart is breaking for you and Ryan's family. I went to my Christmas card from you, Phyllis. I reread all the wonderful things you said about your children and grandchildren. You even told us where your children were living. I will never forget Ryan. I had the absolute pleasure of teaching him in each of his four years at GHS. From the first time I met him, when he was a freshman, I could tell that there was something special about him. He was such a nice, polite, hard working individual, full of integrity. He was so respectful ... not just of his elders, but of everyone, no matter who you were. He cared about everyone. He helped others. He did his absolute best in everything. I can honestly say that in my 13 years of teaching, Ryan was one of my favorite and one of the best students that I have ever had. As an educator, I can say that it's not very often that a teacher will say they look up to a student. Ryan was that exception. I admire him greatly. I will miss him a lot. Someone like Ryan doesn't come along very often ... he was a special individual.

Fischer family, I remember when I used to help at Grandview Elementary, Ryan was one of the few kids who really didn't need any help in the hallway, so sometimes we would just sit for a few minutes and talk about the Red Wings. I never personally knew Ryan, but a lady came into my work this evening and was talking about it. She then went on to say "He was the type of guy you would want your daughter to date". Our hearts were just broken to learn of Ryan's passing. It was beyond comprehension to lose a child such as Ryan. We understood he always had goals he wanted to achieve and did, but to be accepted to West Point was his dream of dreams. Thank God that he was spared long enough to receive the wonderful news of that accomplishment. We only wish we could have known him better. It can not be overstated enough how infectious that smile or his happiness was. Ryan was simply amazing. He was a fantastic role model and leader for his peers, and will continue to be even in the future. He was truly sealed with the Holy Spirit and a member of Christ's body. I first met Ryan as he led my children's VBS crew. And did he ever make it fun and inspire them! My heart is so heavy when I remember how enthused our little Conor was when he came home each day and said "Ryan called me a rock star again today!" Though not many of us had the opportunity to meet Ryan in person, when the news of his passing was shared on our USMA Class of 2018 Facebook page, so many were impacted by the loss of our future classmate. Ryan was a role model of self-control and determination to our young men yet had an appropriate, infectious sense of silliness and humor. He was often the first to remember to include his buddy's little girl cousin (6 yrs younger) on a beach, in the company of 5 other young men. Ryan and Brendan did it together, leaving my daughter enough dignity to feel wanted, protected, and remembered. I had a 19 year old cousin that passed away in March, 2001, that played hockey for Brother Rice High School and still think about him everyday, and I smile everytime I do! Although I did not know Ryan personally, he seemed to be a stand up gentleman with the ability to inspire those around him. It is heartbreaking to hear that Ryan was taken from this world before he was about to truly receive the opportunity to set out and make his mark. Fischer Family, I sadly did not have the opportunity to know Ryan personally. But his outstanding character and persona were made evident to all through his desire to serve his country and his acceptance into West Point. As news of his passing spread throughout the USMA Class of 2018, our hearts were broken that we would not have the opportunity to meet and serve with our future classmate, soldier, and friend. His memory will be carried with us through our tenure at the Academy. I know that words and condolences don't help ease the pain of Ryan's passing, but know that we mourn with you. Scott, Roni, Kelsea and Connor, The Lenar family is keeping you in our prayers during this most difficult time in life. As was displayed at the Celebration on Sunday, the hockey community is a strong bond, and we will always be there for you. Many fond memories of Ryan and the Fischer family come to mind - those fun tournaments as Mites, and playing against Ryan's hockey team as the boys grew older. Ryan always had a smile after each game regardless of the outcome. I witnessed that many times! He even tried to "chat it up" with Austin on the ice when they played Kenowa, and Austin was having none of that! I think back on that now, and I truly believe that Ryan was the type of kid that just wanted everyone around him to be as happy as he was. He will truly be missed by all of us. Roni, Scott & Family - We are so very sorry for the loss of your beloved son Ryan. Our hearts break for you and this tragic loss. Many good memories of Ryan playing hockey over the years when our boys were young, and then in high school playing each other. Bittersweet memories of the Wednesday night game at Ferris and seeing Ryan's smiling face hugging Jacob after the game. You raised an awesome son who leaves behind a wonderful legacy. My son Harrison had the chance to spend a week with Ryan at Boys State and made an instant friend. From everything Harrison told me-- not just in this heartbreaking time, but on the drive back from Northwood-- Ryan was a golden light. We feel blessed that he had the gift of knowing Ryan. The memory of Ryan-- his character and spirit will forever be etched in his heart. Just to give you a sense of the impact Ryan had on the group of close Boys State friends from various parts of the state in just one week-- they are intent to brave whatever the weather may bring to honor Ryan and say goodbye tomorrow. I'm sure this isn't surprising to you... Ryan sounds like an amazing person who did not spare his golden light from shining in the time he had. My deepest condolences--you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Roni and your awesome family- our family is so very sorry to hear about Ryan. I can't imagine what you're enduring. It doesn't surprise me that you have such extraordinary kids. Ryan sounds like an absolute pleasure. When he met our daughter in Ludington last summer, she had such nice things to say about him. We are deeply saddened to hear about Ryan. Our daughter (Talor) and Ryan were classmates through their elementary and middle school years. We went through Talor's old yearbooks this past weekend and talked about all of the qualities that made Ryan such an inspiration to everyone he met. He made time for people ~ a truly kind and gentle soul. As Talor said, "You are supposed to say nice things about people when they pass away, but this time, everything being said really is true." May God help you find peace in the difficult days ahead, and may you find comfort in knowing that your son was such a blessing to so many. Our prayers are with you all.

My most sincere condolences go out to Scott, Roni, Kelsea, and Connor Fischer as well as to Ryan's extended family and friends. There is not any doubt that Ryan was so very well loved throughout his community and beyond. Ryan has served as a role model for the people he touched and he will continue to do so for years and years to come. Having been so close in age to Ryan, I appreciate all he did for others. It means a lot to go out of your way to make someone's day a little brighter or a little happier with a simple smile. It is evident from the beautiful services that have taken place in Ryan's honor that he had a way of being everyone's friend. The Fischer family has lost one if its members; however, in some aspect, the Fischer Family has grown. Everyone coming together as they did to celebrate Ryan's life was such a beautiful thing. Though taken from earth too soon, heaven has gained another precious angel. May the hard times ahead be lightened with the love and support of your closest family, friends, and the community at large. May God bless each of you and hold you like he has held Ryan. Ryan will watch over us all with a smile until we meet in reunion with him again in heaven.
