Stephen Peter Asaro, age 80 of West Michigan and formerly of Flint, Michigan, passed away peacefully on June 10, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on April 4, 1946, in Flint, Michigan, Steve lived a life defined by devotion—to his family, his work, and the simple joys that brought him happiness.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Tony and Mary Asaro (Pintacura); brother, Jack Asaro; and sister, Maria Vechell (Asaro). He is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia (“Patty”) Asaro, with whom he shared a lifetime of love and partnership. He will be deeply missed by his children Michelle Pena (Paul) and Stephen Asaro (Catherine). He was a proud and loving grandfather to Brianna Pena-Wojtanek (Matthew), Joshua Pena (Hunter), Alexis Asaro, and Ashley Asaro. He is also survived by his brother, Peter Asaro (Susan); along with many cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members.
A Flint resident in his early years, Steve graduated from Flint Southwestern High School in 1964. He went on to attend Ferris State University, graduating in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science in Business, and was a member of the Sigma Lambda Chi fraternity.
Following college, Steve began a distinguished career with General Motors, where he worked for over 35 years as a dedicated parts analyst. After retiring from GM Service Parts Operations, he and Patty relocated to West Michigan to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Never one to stay idle, Steve began a second career at the Grand Rapids Public Library, where he continued working up until his passing.
Steve had a deep love for his family and took great pride in his Italian heritage, which influenced his appreciation for tradition, connection, and storytelling. He had a natural ability to make others feel welcome and will be remembered for his kind, likeable demeanor and warm sense of humor. Whether sharing a story, completing a crossword puzzle, or studying a map, Steve found joy in the little things—and often brought others along for the ride.
A loyal Detroit sports fan, Steve rooted passionately for the Detroit Tigers and Detroit Lions, through good seasons and challenging ones alike. He found relaxation and happiness outdoors, especially fishing, golfing, playing softball—including in a senior league—and traveling to Northern Michigan, a location that always held a special place in his heart.
Steve will also be fondly remembered for his humor and endearing clumsiness, traits that made him uniquely himself and brought laughter to those around him. Above all, Steve’s legacy is one of love, loyalty, and kindness. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew him.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 17, 2026, at Cook Memorial Chapel, 4235 Prairie St. SW, Grandville, Michigan, with visitation prior to the service beginning at 10 a.m. In honor of Stephen, memorial contributions may be made to Porter Hills Village or Saint Mary's Foundation (Trinity Health Grand Rapids). The family welcomes memories and messages at www.cookcaresgrandville.com in their guestbook online.
