MATHESON - Thomas Gregory Matheson, age 77, devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend departed this earthly life peacefully, in the company of family at his home, on October 27, 2005. Tom, a 38 year resident of Grandville, was loved and admired by all those fortunate enough to have known him. His uncanny wit and infectious sense of humor, tremendous generosity, tenderness, loyalty and love will forever be remembered and terribly missed. “Mr. Tom” will be missed by the neighborhood children he adored. Tom so enjoyed his neighbors on Tomahawk Drive. He also had a passion for music and for reading. His greatest love, however was always his family. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army; then went on to work at Michigan Express and later Jervis and Ex-cell-o Corporations in the Aerospace Industry. After retiring, he joined the ranks of the Grand Rapids Public School bus drivers. He derived great enjoyment from their friendship. Tom was preceded in death by his parents James and Edna Matheson, of Chicago. He is survived by the love of his life Frances, with whom he shared 53 years of marriage. Also surviving are his children Carolyn, Susan, James Aileen, Mary Jo, Gregory, and Glenn Elizabeth; grandchildren Jessica Dombrowski, Lauren Matheson, Nicholas and Michael Matheson; great granddaughter Taylor Dombrowski; brother Brigadier General Bruce J. Matheson, USMC Ret. Mary Jo Matheson of Hawaii and nephews Scott Matheson of Colorado Springs, Kerry Matheson of Hawaii; dear friends who did so much for Tom and his family over the years Larry Jo Ann Sprite, Tammy Hormel, and Donna Host. A funeral service to celebrate Tom’s life will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Cook Funeral Home east building 4235 Prairie St. SW, in Grandville, with Dr. Gerald Toshalis and Rev. Tom Pier-Fitzgerald officiating. The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. Sunday and 6-9 p.m. Monday, at the Cook Funeral Home west building.
