Joseph Anthony Ruhoff Sr (Papa Ru, Big Ru, Joey) was 67 years old and resided in Grants Pass, OR. On October 20, 2018 Joe peacefully passed away in his sleep from natural causes at his home. Joe was born on October 27, 1950 in Los Angeles, CA. His parents Francis and Andy Ruhoff were caring and nourishing , helping turn Joe into the man we all came to know and love. He went to St. John Chrysotom Catholic School for K-8, Loyola High School, Loyola University Los Angeles (Now Loyola Marymount University). He received his Bachelor’s degree with a major in Sociology and a minor in talking smack. He was a proud member and the Big Brother of the Phi Kappa Theta fraternity, the place where he built so many life-long friendships and memories. Following college he worked at Northrup Aerospace. In 1992 Joe and his family moved to Grants Pass, Oregon where he and Verge took over his father’s business. He ran Omega Engraving prior to his recent retirement at the end of 2017, which he passed off to his daughter and son in law with such happiness. Prior to and after retirement there were so many things that Joe loved doing. In his younger days, baseball and softball, were his passion. Upon becoming a father his interests and hobbies shifted to coaching his kids, pioneering fantasy football , golf, bowling and traveling all around the world with his wife, children and friends. Joe was an active parishioner at St Anne’s Catholic Church. Anyone that ever crossed Joe’s path will never forget his warm hugs, hearty laugh and contagious personality. Joe left behind the love of his life, Virginia (Verge) Ruhoff. His two children Joe Jr, Carmella Jump and their spouses Amy Ruhoff and Shane Jump. Along with his 5 grandchildren Alexandra (16), Benjamin (12), Paige (10), Andrew (9) and Teddy (6). Thank God, no great grandchildren yet!! Holiday Greetings to the Family of My Friend Joe!
I have known Joe since my childhood (~age 10) - we used to participate in athletic activities at Ladera Park in Los Angeles, close to our childhood homes. Shortly thereafter Joe was a classmate of mine at Loyola High School for four years - we even carpooled together during our junior and senior years. Lost contact with Joe except for a few high school class reunions, I believe the last time I saw Joe was at our 40th reunion - he was always the same Joe that I knew so well from our youth - we even had the chance to play 18 at Wilshire Country Club the next day. Last Spring I called Joe and encourage him to attend our 50th reunion, but he had a prior commitment at his golf club.
Last week I received a newsletter from Loyola High and was shocked to see Joe's name in the Obituary section. I am so sorry for the loss of your loved one! I always cherish my time and memories of my friend Joe.
