Boyd was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on October 2, 1949. Boyd and his family moved to Dallas in 1951. In 1968 Boyd graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Dallas, where he played on the varsity tennis team. Boyd was an Eagle Scout in Troop 33 at Walnut Hill Methodist Church.
Boyd received a BBA in General Business from Stephen F. Austin State University in 1972 and a JD from the University of Texas at Austin School of Law in 1975. Boyd and Susan Kay Goodman were married in 1975. Boyd was an Instructor of Business Law at SFA from 1975 to 1977 while Susan completed her Master of Education degree at SFA.
In 1977 Boyd and Susan returned to Dallas. Boyd worked as corporate counsel for Allianz Life, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas, and Southwestern Life. Boyd retired from UNT in 2015 after serving as Director of Research Compliance for 13 years.
Boyd and his family greatly enjoyed visiting national and state parks. Boyd was an avid fan of the Mavericks, the Cowboys, the Longhorns, and the Southlake Carroll Dragons. But his favorite activity of all was spending time with his daughters Sarah and Laura and his grandsons Tristan and Lucian.
Boyd was preceded in death by his mother, Rebecca (“Betty”) Love Jones Herndon, his father, Polk Mercer (“Ned”) Herndon, Jr., and his sister, Marilyn Ann Tatum (James). Boyd is survived by his wife of 48 years, Susan Kay Herndon, his daughters Sarah Rebecca Romack (Braxton) and Laura Kay Herndon, his grandsons Tristan Chase Romack and Lucian Alexander Romack, his sister Diana Love Caswell (Brett), his niece Melissa Ann O’Brien (Tom), and his great niece Alex O’Brien Brady.
No services will be held, but we will raise a glass in honor of a life well lived. If desired, memorial gifts in Boyd’s honor may be made to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation for the development of Palo Pinto Mountains State Park.
