Donna was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on November 30, 1945. She was the middle child of Sallie Ann and John L. Walker.
Donna graduated high school from St. Mary’s Academy in the historic French Quarters. Upon graduation, she attended Southern University of New Orleans and Touro Infirmary School of Nursing. In 1979, she became a Registered Nurse at Touro Infirmary working in the Medical Surgical Unit, the Emergency Department and the Dialysis Unit over the years. When the Dialysis Unit was purchased by Uptown Dialysis, Donna stayed on until she moved to Texas in 2000 to be closer to one of her daughters. Prior to moving from New Orleans, Donna completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Loyola University and Masters of Science in Nursing at Southern University and started teaching nursing at Delgado Community College. There her passion for teaching the profession she loved was ignited.
In 2001, Donna moved to Morgan’s Point Resort, Texas and accepted the position of Assistant Professor at the Scott and White College of Nursing at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton, Texas. While she retired in 2011, she continued furthering her profession as a contributing editor to several nursing publications and test preparation materials. Donna had a passion for nursing and developing nurses who could think critically and care for the patient and not just their illness.
In her last months, when she was in and out of the hospital, she continued to “quiz” and train the nurses assigned to provide her care. When nurses did well, she would smile and say, “You’re a good nurse, good job”. If they did not do such a good job, let’s just say, nurses make the worst patients.
Donna was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church. Her social and professional memberships included Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and the American Nursing Association.
Donna was preceded in death by her parents and son, Keith Walker.
Donna is survived by her siblings Barbara Chappell of Glendale, AZ and John “Larry” Walker (Wanda) of New Orleans; daughters, Karen Walker Taylor (Michael) of Shreveport, Gynetreia Harrison Mulberry of Euless, Raquel Harrison Hardy (Kelvin) of Bedford, Mindy Hubbard of North Richland Hills and Alysia Hubbard of Bedford; grandchildren Jestin Hubbard, Jordan Lunkins, Michael Mulberry, Raquel Ari Hardy and Sean Hardy; great-grandson Kai Collins; niece Bridgette McKinney (Anthony); nephews John Larry Walker, III and Mark Walker (Danielle); and a host of cousins, in-laws, family and friends.
