George Owen Roach was born November 19, 1927 in Sondheimer, Louisiana. He passed away peacefully after a short illness, surrounded by his loving family on March 30, 2019 in Grapevine, Texas. He was 91 years old.
George grew up in Monroe, Louisiana, attended Neville High School and played linebacker for the football team. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the Navy and was stationed in San Diego and Hawaii. Following his discharge, he enrolled at the University of Southwestern Louisiana in Lafayette, and majored in education. George also played football for the “Ragin’ Cajuns”. It was in college that he met his beloved wife, Gloria Delcambre. They married August 19, 1951.
After graduating, he was employed as a teacher and athletic coach at Kaplan High School. His students called him “Coach Roach” and many of them kept in contact with him throughout the years.
George began working in the oil field industry in the early 50’s stayed in this field until he retired in 1991. During his career, he lived in New Iberia, Lafayette, Houston, and settled in New Orleans. His investment and part ownership in Cardinal Wireline Specialists, Inc. supported hundreds of families living and working on the Gulf Coast. After retiring in 1991, George and Gloria moved to Katy, Texas. In 2018, he relocated to Grapevine, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John David Roach and Hattie Faye Calhoun, and sister, Betty Jo Ogden, wife, Gloria Delcambre Roach, son, George Michael Roach, and son in-law, Randy Myers.
He is survived by his three daughters, Debbi Wendt (Jim Wendt), Susan Myers ( Reid Schultz), and Donna Oas (Larry Oas), and daughter in law, Camille Roach. George and Gloria had 10 grandchildren: Ryan Wendt (Mandy), Jeremy Wendt (Devin), Ashley Weaver (Kenneth), Rachelle Meredith ( Justin), Emily Vargas ( Jordan), Adam Oas (Kristin), Luke Oas (Whitney), Seth Myers (Lindsey), April Oas, and Matthew Roach. His 13 great grandchildren are Owen, Aubrey, Maverick, Chase, Cooper, Zoey, Travis, Rush, Sawyer, Hudson, Jaxon, Ava, and Zakary.
He will be greatly missed by his family, countless nieces and nephews, brother-in-law, sisters- in-law, and many close friends.
George was an avid sports fan. His favorite teams were the New Orleans Saints and the Houston Astros. He enjoyed golfing, swimming and traveling. His favorite vacations were our annual family trips to Destin, Florida.
George was a people person. He was one in a million. Everyone who knew George loved him. He always had a smile on his face and had a way of making everyone feel special. The number of lives he impacted are countless. The 2 most important things to George were his faith and his family. When he passed, Heaven gained another faithful soul.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00am on Thursday, April 25, 2019, at Guardian Angel Catholic Church, 5610 Demel St, Wallis, TX. 77485.
