Jocylene "Joyce" McHenry

Jocylene (Joyce) McHenry was born in Mt. Calm, TX on March 7, 1937 to Sylvester Sr. and Beaulah. Joyce shared the same birthday with her mother. Joyce received her early Christian upbringing at True Vine Baptist Church, Mt. Calm, TX under the guidance of her father, Sylvester Sr., who was a deacon at the church. She received her early education in Mt. Calm and graduated from Phyllis Wheatley High School, Hubbard, TX. During high school, she played on the girls’ basketball team and Joyce was a great player and fierce competitor.

After graduation, she married her high school sweetheart, Charles Ray Palmer of Dawson, TX. They moved from Dawson to Odessa, TX and remained there until they moved to Grapevine, TX. Joyce also lived in Houston for several years and returned to Grapevine, where she called home.

Joyce was a huge sports fan and not surprisingly, her favorite sport was basketball. She liked watching television, talking to her relatives and friends on the phone, and cooking. She was an excellent cook and one could always depend on her preparing a delicious Sunday dinner. She also had an “unusual” sense of humor – sometimes funny and sometimes serious – but she always spoke her mind.

On February 16, 2021, during a brief hospital stay, she was called home to be with the Lord. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, Sylvester Sr. and Beaulah Burns, Mt. Calm, TX.; his sisters – Ida Mae Guerra, Houston, TX; Lela Mae Martin, Hubbard, TX; Juanita Baye, Houston, TX; Laura Jo Jackson, Grapevine, TX; and her brother - Sylvester (Sonny) Burns Jr., Keller, TX.

Joyce leaves to cherish her memories, her sisters – Lottie L. Perry, Grapevine, TX; Clarice McGrue, Dallas, TX; her brother - Charles (Tony) R. Burns, Grapevine, TX; and her loving family members – nieces, nephews, cousins – and friends and others.

A Celebration of Joyce's life will be held at 2:00pm, Friday, March 12, 2021 at Foust and Son Funeral Home.
