John Lloyd Powers, of McAdoo, Texas, passed away on May 11, 2025, in Grapevine, Texas, at the age of 79. Born on April 2, 1946, in Spur, Texas, John was a man whose life was deeply rooted in family, community, and connection.
Raised on a cotton farm on the edge of the Cap Rock, John grew up working alongside his father, Coy Powers, and sharing countless adventures with his sisters and cousins. Among them, none was closer than his cousin Jerry Johnson. As kids, Johnny and Jerry were more like brothers than cousins—thick as thieves and full of mischief. They spent their days running wild through the canyons, getting into trouble, and laughing every step of the way. Life in the small farming town of McAdoo was never dull when Johnny and Jerry were around, and the memories they made remained a cherished part of Johnny’s story.
He attended school in McAdoo, where he excelled in sports, especially basketball. A proud member of the McAdoo High School basketball team, Johnny helped lead them to back-to-back state championships in 1963 and 1964—a remarkable achievement and a highlight of his youth that he carried with pride. He went on to play basketball at Clarendon College before moving to Irving, Texas.
John built a long and steady career at TXU, where he worked faithfully for 39 years. In all that he did, John was guided by a deep devotion to family. He was a proud and loving father to his daughters, Shannon and Holly, and a constant presence in their lives—from dance recitals to drill team performances, always the enthusiastic “girl dad.” He later became a devoted grandfather to Everleigh, Adalyn, and Mycahla, showering them with love, encouragement, and playful affection.
John’s life was also enriched by his loving partnership with Syble Reid. Together they shared a passion for country and western dancing, live concerts, and their pool league community. John’s zest for life was matched by his love for the Dallas Cowboys and NASCAR.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Coy and Julia Faye Powers; his sister, Linda Kunce; his daughter, Holly Powers; his life partner, Syble Reid; and his stepdaughter, Denise Cline. He is survived by his sister, Vicki Ogle, and her husband, Tom Ogle; his daughter, Shannon Hartmann, and her husband, John Hartmann; and his beloved granddaughters, Everleigh Hartmann, Adalyn Hartmann, and Mycahla Cline.
John had an extraordinary gift for making connections. Whether at a gas station, grocery store, or favorite restaurant, he never met a stranger. His warmth, humor, and genuine interest in others left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He was a caregiver, a storyteller, a friend to many, and a man who lived with open arms and an open heart.
He touched countless lives with his kindness, loyalty, and laughter. John Lloyd Powers will be deeply missed, but his legacy of love and friendship will live on in all who had the joy of knowing him.
A funeral service will be held at McAdoo United Methodist Church on May 31 at 1:00 PM.
