Sullivan Judge Husman was the perfect combination of his mom and dad. He had his mama’s lips, his dad’s hands, and both of our long toes. He had a beautiful head of hair, the sweetest footprints, and the most perfectly round little toes you’ve ever seen. We can only imagine that, as he grew, he would have carried his dad’s patience and his mom’s big heart. There is no doubt in our minds that he would have become a kind and compassionate young man with a heart for helping others.
For reasons we may never understand, Sully was taken from us far too soon. While it is easy to grieve all the things he will never get to do, we choose also to honor all that he did accomplish in his four precious days of life. Most of all, he captured the hearts of every person who met him. His little face was irresistible, and he was simply beautiful. He was deeply loved and treasured by Ma and Pa, Mamaw and Papaw, and all of his aunts and uncles. He brought a sense of calm to everyone around him, and you could lose hours just staring at his sweet face.
Rarely do we think of a newborn as brave, but our Sullivan Judge was exactly that. During his time in the NICU, Sully received beads for each act of bravery he endured and overcame. In just four short days on Earth, he earned 21 beads of bravery. He faced more than any child ever should, all so we could have a little more time with him. In every moment, he showed us courage beyond words.
As Ryan and I reflect on the beginning of our journey into parenthood, we know our path has been one unlike most, and not one we would wish on anyone. Yet even in heartbreak, Sully taught us something that will stay with us forever: how to be strong, and how to be brave. Life will bring both joy and sorrow, highs and lows. The most important thing we can do is meet it all with strength, bravery, and the support of those we love. Because of Sully, we know that with love, we can face anything.
Though his time here was brief, Sullivan Judge Husman will be loved endlessly, missed deeply, and remembered always.
Please join us in wearing bright colors to honor the brightness he brought to our lives during his short life.
